Ras Mohammed National Park is an essential feature of economic development of South Sinai, which was declared National Park in 1983 and subjected to comprehensive development program initiated in 1989. Its main objective is to protect marine and terrestrial wildlife.
The park is situated in the tourist region of the Red Sea Riviera, located 12 km from the city of Sharm-el-Sheikh. The park includes 135 square kilometers land area and 345 square kilometers water area. It encompasses two islands, Tiran and Sana fir. Tiran Island is located approximately 6 km offshore from the Sinai Peninsula. Because of the earthquakes underwater caves are formed in the Ras Mohammad. Ras Muhammad National Park experiences a very dry climate, with only minimal rainfall during the winter. The inland area includes a diversity of dessert habitats such as mountains and wadis, gravel and coastal mud plains and sand dunes. More than 220 species of coral are found in the Ras Mohammad area including 125 types of soft corals. |
